I had a stunning realization this past weekend. Most of us are flying blind through life much like what pilots call a graveyeard spiral and don’t know it.
Recently, while reviewing an aviation accident report, I recalled my own experiences with spatial disorientation as a private pilot that related in a way that surprised me.
The graveyard spiral happens when a pilot becomes disoriented and trusts their senses instead of their instruments. It can happen suddenly and without warning in any number of circumstances.
You may remember the tragic accident that claimed basketball legend Kobe Bryant and others. Investigators revealed that his pilot suffered spatial disorientation, unintentionally flying them into the ground.
This phenomenon isn’t limited to the skies. It also mirrors how most of us move through life and leadership.
We react to circumstances, strive for control, or judge ourselves and others, believing we’re doing what’s best.
But often, these are unconscious patterns—our conditioning masquerading as a steady horizon.
Just as pilots learn to trust their instruments over instincts, leaders must learn to trust awareness over the illusions of the mind.
The moment you recognize your lack of awareness, you step into it.
This shift from unconscious reactivity to conscious awareness is the key to navigating life and leadership with clarity.
What patterns might be keeping you in a spiral?
