This story isn’t just about fish. It’s about us.

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says ‘Morning, boys. How’s the water?’ And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes ‘What the hell is water?
― David Foster Wallace

Like those young fish, we swim through life often unaware of the very medium we exist in – our consciousness, our awareness.

But what if we could step back and truly see the ‘water’ we’re swimming in?

This image captures a profound truth: You are not the ego, so when you become aware of the ego in you, it does not mean you know who you are—it means you know who you are not.

Just as the young fish didn’t recognize the water, we often don’t recognize our true nature. We mistake the ego – our thoughts, our reactive patterns – for who we are.

But there’s more to us. There’s the awareness that can observe the ego, like the older fish aware of the water.

When we step into this awareness, we remove the greatest obstacle to truly knowing ourselves. We begin to see the ‘water’ we’ve been swimming in all along.

So I ask you:

What’s your water?

What aspects of your consciousness have you been taking for granted?

And what might change if you could see them clearly?
